Roy Burks earned nine varsity letters at Dow High. In 1968, he was awarded MVP honors in football, basketball and track, and repeated that feat the following year.

Burks was named to the Midland Daily News All-Area Football Team on both offense and defense in 1969, while also being recognized as a member of the Saginaw All-Area Football Team and AP All-State Football Team.

Burks again collected MDN All-Area and AP All-State honors in football in 1970 as a senior, ending his high school football career with 372 carries for 2,867 yards, and passing 40 times for 516 yards.

Burks went on to play football at the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Big Ten championship team in 1971 and a Big Ten co-champion in 1972 and 1973. He concluded his football career at Northwood, where he was named an All-GLIAC defensive player in 1975.
