The Ithaca Yellow Jackets defeat the Michigan Lutheran Seminary Cardinals by the final of 42-7

The win improves Ithaca to 4-0 on the season and drops MLS to 1-3.

The passing game was the Key for Ithaca tonight. Senior quarterback Joey Bentley sparked the Ithaca offense today with 260 passing yards and four touchdowns and also added 93 rushing yards and a touchdown.

“We have really good receivers and Joey is really good. Our offensive line also gave us plenty of time to throw the ball” Head coach Terry Hessbrook said.

The top receiver for the Yellow Jackets was senior Devin Barnes. Barnes finished the day with three receptions and 114 yards to go with two touchdowns.

Ithaca control early in the first quarter with a 97 yard Touchdown pass to start the scoring. Senior Quarterback Joey Bentley connected with senior receiver Devin Barnes at midfield and Barnes took it to the house to give Ithaca an early 7-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for Barnes to make another big play for the Yellow Jackets. On the following defensive series, Barnes picked off MLS quarterback Cade Kestner at midfield and took it all the way for a pick six and extended the Yellow Jacket lead to 14-0.

“Any time you get a defensive score it changes the momentum and takes the air right out of them” Hessbrook said.

Ithaca would keep the momentum on their side with a drive capped off by a 35 yard touchdown pass by Bentley to an open Seth Davis to move the lead to 21-0.

The Yellow Jackets would add another touchdown on the following drive with a 15 yard touchdown run to move the lead to 28-0 and would add another with just over a minute left in the half by another touchdown pass from Bentley to Barnes. To make it 35-0.

Ithaca started the second half by forcing a three and out for the Cardinals.

The Yellow Jackets turned the first possession of the second half into points quickly with a 27 yard touchdown pass from Bentley to senior Adam Culp to make it a 42-0 lead.

The Cardinals would break the shutout with an 11 yard touchdown run from Kestner to make it a 42-7 game.

“I thought our defense played pretty well at times, we have areas where we gotta get better and we will get better” Hessbrook said.

The Yellow Jackets continue league play next Friday Sept, 22 for a home game against Valley Lutheran.
