West Michigan Roundup, Wednesday 3/10/21
Last night featured only a handful of games and was one of the lightest slates we have had this season. The majority of Wolverine Conference teams were back in action with Allegan pulling off the upset over Plainwell 50-47 to earn their second conference victory of the season. Sturgis got past Dowagiac 62-44 led by a record breaking performance from Thomas Kurowski. Edwardsburg played a non-conference game against Niles and got back in the win column 46-33. Former Southwest 10 member Eau Claire played Decatur and won a close one 53-47 over the Raiders. The next few days will be stacked with huge matchups including Schoolcraft hosting Benton Harbor.
Best Win: Bellevue over Climax-Scotts 61-44
Climax-Scotts came into the game unbeaten and even receiving votes in the AP poll. Bellevue fell 62-40 in the first meeting between these teams earlier this season, but got a huge victory at home. Bellevue went (20-2) last season, but graduated a lot of talent including multiple all-conference players. They improved to (8-2) now with losses to Climax-Scotts and Bronson.
Next Best: Calvin Christian over Hopkins 59-57 (OT)
Less than a week ago Hopkins defeated Calvin Christian 68-49, but Calvin flipped the script last night with a major overtime victory. Besides undefeated Godwin, the OK Silver has been a dogfight this season with Calvin, Hopkins, NorthPointe, Sparta, and Comstock Park, all beating up on eachother.
Best Performance: Sturgis’ Thomas Kurowski (2021 G): 44 points
Kurowski, one of the top scorers in the area, is more valuable to his team than nearly anyone in the state. He poured in 44 of his teams 62 points last night in a victory over Dowagiac. That 44 point effort established a new school record that was previously 43 and held by Kurowski along with Chance Stewart.
