West Michigan Report w/ Kyle Mills: Week 2
Class isn't even in session yet for public schools but football is in full swing as Week 2 action finished up on Friday night after a very busy and eventful Thursday in West Michigan.
Being conveniently located in Grand Rapids along with working for FOX17 to help produce a show called The Blitz, I am directly in the center of what is going on in high school football in West Michigan.
I will try to post a new update on various games from West Michigan each and every weekend, highlighting the top performances and notable scores.

Huskies Win A Big Game
Senior standout Jake Martin was once again the story for Forest Hills Northern as the QB accounted for 4 total TD's (2 passing, 2 rushing) in a big showdown on Thursday night. Although the Huskies had a big lead at halftime, Byron Center rallied back and cut the lead to 5 points at one point. A late TD scamper helped FHN seal the deal as they won 40-28.
Lowell Rebounds
The Red Arrows bounced back from a close loss last week against Walled Lake Western and turned all of their anger and energy into pounding Hubbard (Illinois) into the ground, winning 44-0.
Grandville Rollin'
Destroying Jenison in Week 1, the Bulldogs ran wild over Lansing Sexton in Week 2. Winning 38-25 over the Division 4 semi-finalist, RB Nolan Meekhof piled up 271 yards on the ground and 2 TD's on only 25 carries. Things get harder for Grandville in the upcoming weeks as they have Muskegon and Rockford on tap in the vaunted OK-Red.
Muskegon dominates GR Christian
Even though Grand Rapids Christian was the first to strike, QB Kalil Pimpleton (3 TD's) and the Big Reds put on a scoring attack that included 42 straight points in what turned out to be a big time blowout. Muskegon and GR Christian now both sit at 1-1 on the season.
Caledonia Beats South Christian
In what was a bit of a surprise, the Fighting Scots destroyed South Christian 23-7. Caledonia senior QB Tanner Christian couldn't get much going through the air but was deadly on the ground, rushing for 171 yards on 28 attempts and 2 TDs. They like to control the line of scrimmage and are very physical on both sides of the ball. Caledonia looks legit again this season.
East Kentwood Nail-biter
The Falcons are off to their 2nd straight 2-0 start but again had to fight until the bitter end to defeat East Lansing 21-14. Evan Maday rushed and threw for short scores as East Kentwood prevailed.
Hudsonville Wins Again
Despite losing QB Mason Opple to graduation, the Eagles are still flying high after sneaking out a 4th quarter comeback victory over Traverse City West 16-14. Kicking the game winning FG with less than 2 minutes left on the clock, Hudsonville moved to 2-0 after back to back non-conference scares. Senior QB Bryce Elliott was on the money whenever he had time to get rid of the ball, completing 15/20 pass attempts and throwing a TD to 3-sport star Jared Blum.
Zeeland East WR's Big Day
Facing Holy Trinity Catholic from Canada, the Chix didn't waste any time in attacking them through the air. Scoring on the first play of the game on a 70 yard pass, senior WR Khylin Barton totaled over 300 yards receiving and ended up with 5 total TD receptions. Zeeland East rolled 56-7.

Detroit Loyola wins a big game
A week after falling to power house Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Loyola faced another tough test in Muskegon Oakridge. Although they got down early, Loyola didn't quit as they grounded and pounded their way to a 42-13 victory. RB's Amir Braken, Josh Stewart and Treveon Vaughn accounted for close to 275 yards on the ground and 5 TD's combined for Loyola.
Portage Central over Battle Creek Lakeview
In a meeting that never happened in 2014 due to severe weather, this one went right down to the wire. Despite Lakeview RB Dre'On Kemp scoring all 3 of his teams TD's, Portage Central fought back in the last quarter. Portage Central WR Justin McIntyre caught a TD pass on 4th and goal to pull his team within 1 point and then minutes later WR Raine Potts caught a leaping TD grad to give his team the lead for good late in the 4th quarter. Portage Central won 28-21 in what turned out to be a great game.
Montague and Ravenna have a shootout
In what was a crazy first half, Ravenna led Montague 41-35 at the break thanks to a hook n' ladder play that worked to perfect as time expired in the half for a 65 yard score. Each team only didn't score on 1 possession in the 1st half and racked up 300+ total yards of offense before the game was even half over. Junior RB David Thompson was the catalyst on offense for Ravenna as he racked up 240 yards on the ground and 3 TD's. But it wasn't enough as Montague QB Jacob Buchberger went on a roll of his own even after having to change his jersey number after it ripped. He totaled 4 total TD's as he threw for 2 and ran 2 more in, helping his team explode for 35 2nd half points and eventually the win as the final score read 70-48.
