Walled Lake Western kept its undefeated season alive Friday with a spirited 20-17 win over defending state runners-up Mason.

The Warriors (8-0) have consistently showcased one of the best offenses in the state, having scored over 360 points entering the battle against Mason.

But Friday night proved WL Western could win in a variety of ways. This time using its underrated defense to shut down Mason.

This was the first time the Warriors scored under 37 points all season, often eclipsing 50 points.

Mason grabbed a 17-13 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the game, leaving potentially one last chance for the Warriors to preserve their undefeated record.

Mason forced a turnover on a promising WL Western drive, getting a key interception with four minutes remaining.

Unable to run out the clock, the Warriors retained possession. This time, they didn’t falter, scoring the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

With just seconds left on the clock, Mason attempted a mid-range field goal, but it went wide as time expired.

Walled Lake Western will try to wrap up the regular season undefeated with a finale against Walled Lake Central.

Mason (6-2) will look to rebound Friday against Fenton.
