HACKLEY STADIUM - MUSKEGON, MI: In front of a packed house at Historic Hackley Stadium fans got their money's worth and then some, as state powerhouses Muskegon and Detroit King - ranked #2 and #3 in the state by TheDZone, respectively - traded blows in a tight contest leading up to a 3-point Muskegon victory over King, 24-21.
The heavyweight match up pitted the veer-option/power run attack of Muskegon, against the spread-offense air attack of Detroit King. However it was defense that also proved important, in what was a relatively low-scoring game for two teams known to flood the scoreboard with points. Multiple fumbles and an interception occurred at pivotal points in the contest, including the fumbled snap by King and recovery by Muskegon - with under a minute left and King driving in Muskegon territory - that sealed the victory.
For Muskegon - QB Cameron Martinez led the way offensively, racking up 154-yards rushing and 2 TDs, followed by Jeremiah Lockhart whose 76-yards rushing were crucial in the drive that scored the game-winning touchdown. Jakobie Harris also contributed some big runs, including a 29-yard TD run on a nicely executed option pitch. Defensively for Muskegon, LB Ali'Vonta Wallace finished the night with 9 tackles, DB Kolbe Lewis hauled in a big INT in the 2nd quarter, and DE Billie Roberts recovered the fumble that sealed the win.
For Detroit King - QB Dequan Finn played very well in the loss, throwing for 264-yards and 1 TD, and rushing for another 99-yards and two scores. WR Dominick Polidore-Hannah had 8 grabs for 63-yards and a TD, while WR Shondel Hardnett had 4 receptions for 74-yards. On defense, Ray Williams and Marvin Grant made 7 tackles and 6 tackles respectively.
