Head Coach Carlton Brewster talks about his impressive first season at Kalamazoo Central (Story)
Kalamazoo Central has been open for over 150+ years but never in the programs history have they been able to capture a state championship in football. The Maroon Giants in fact have hardily produced any college football prospects in a city where their rivals, Loy Norrix face the same issue.
Kalamazoo Central has 85 more students than Loy Norrix with 1,672 students this 2018-19 school year so there's definitely talent in the school.
Central's football talent is few and far between alumni like Greg Jennings (early 2000's) and Duane Young (late 80's) who are each one of a handful of college football prospects in the past 40+ years out of Kalamazoo Central.
Current Head coach, Carlton Brewster came from Godwin Heights and Wyoming Lee after leading Godwin Heights to one of their best seasons in school history in 2017.
Brewster immediately set a solid foundation with this senior class by guiding 12 to either sign with a college or get them on college teams as walk-ons at D1, D2, and D3 schools.
The 12 seniors who are going to play in college is a drastic change from the past where they mostly would have had very few football players move on to play in college.
Maybe's Brewster's magic is simply believing in the kids and their abilities?
"After watching film, seeing what players returned, our opponents roster, knowing they were close to winning several games and the new schedule. I told my staff, we could go 9-0, and then I said we can make the playoffs," said Brewster. "The kids didn't buy in at first, but I constantly told them it can happen. They were committed in the weight room, development, and guy's were coming to watch film with me during lunch."
"When I seen consistency and how they operate I knew we were going to make the playoffs. When kids started to believe, the energy spread all over the school."
As for this incredible senior class who welcomed Brewster and even had members of the class interview him before he was hired, Brewster had nothing but great things to say about this program changing class, "Since this senior class did what I told them to do. It was a no brainer to sell colleges to our student-athletes. I knew once the schools seen the film they will be interested."
Brewster described his expectations for his program which he preached, "Committed. Weightroom, Player Development, Practice on Time, and take care of school and most importantly trust me."
As for the goal going forward, Brewster replied, "Simple, how can we continue to build and grow from last year!"
Kalamazoo Central finished with a 6-4 record and a first round playoff loss vs. top 10 team Saline, in the Division 1 playoffs in 2018. 2018 was just the 4th season in school history that KC reached the playoffs.
