Cass Tech edged Detroit Catholic Central Saturday with a 17-14 win in the state semifinals.

The game came down to the wire with Detroit CC lining up for a field goal to tie the game with just seconds left on the clock. Cass Tech blocked the kick to win by a field goal and return to Ford Field for the D1 state finals.

Cass Tech was first on the scoreboard with a first-half touchdown. Catholic Central responded, but their extra point was blocked, an eerie sign of things to come.

With the Technicians up 7-6, Detroit CC was next to score - this time punching in a two-point conversion - to take a 14-7 lead.

Cass Tech’s Donald Tabron connected with Will Sykes to help the Technicians pull even at 14-14 in the second half.

The Technicians nailed a field goal with just over nine minutes left in the game, giving the Technicians what would prove to be a decisive 17-14 advantage.

Detroit CC made a strong, late push to win or tie the game, but for the second time in the game, Cass tech blocked a kick to seal the win.

The Technicians will now play Hudsonville next week at Ford Field in Detroit for a shot at the D1 state championship.
