Frank Altimore began coaching at Dow High in 1983, when he was hired as the head varsity football coach. Over the course of his 20-year tenure as the head coach, he amassed well over 100 wins and guided four teams to a playoff berth, two to SVL championships, one to a district title and one to a regional title.

Altimore's 1997 Dow team reached the 1997 Class A state championship game at the Pontiac Silverdome and finished runner-up to Farmington Hills Harrison.

Altimore was also the Dow head girls' golf coach until 2010. Under his leadership, the Lady Chargers won an SVL title and qualified for the state finals in 2003, and Kim Dinh won an individual state title in 2009.

Altimore was named SVL Coach of the Year in both football and girls' golf, and received the Lloyd Osborn Award in 2007.
